Pocket Squares: A Must-Have for Your Wedding Look

When putting together a look for your wedding, or any formal event, you might look at the pocket square section and wonder a) what it is and b) do you really need it. While the pocket square is not a necessity for formal wear, we are big advocates for that extra bit of embellishment. Why not treat yourself to the finer things in life?

What is a pocket square?

A pocket square is very similar to a handkerchief. While the terms are often used interchangeably, the most notable differences are that handkerchiefs tend to be bigger than pocket squares and used in place of a tissue to blow one’s nose. A pocket square is used more of a style aspect and is smaller because it goes in a smaller pocket. A pocket square is a square piece of fabric that is folded and put into the left breast pocket of a suit or tuxedo jacket.

Why we love them

Since the modern day pocket square is not used as a tissue, it is an element of a formal ensemble that provides a touch of elegance. It elevates the wearer’s style subtly, sort of like a garnish for your suit or tuxedo jacket. We love that extra bit of flourish that takes an outfit from ordinary to dignified in an instant. Plus, there’s so much room for personalization with fold, color, pattern and fabric options.

Think of some of your favorite well-dressed characters, either from the fictional or the real world. Someone like James Bond or Jay Gatsby might come to mind. In both these instances, these dapper fellas took their look from simply fashionable to ultra chic with the addition of that little piece of fabric. In this business, James Bond is not just a fictitious character, but a fashion icon that we always have in the back of our minds.

How to style a pocket square

The biggest rule when it comes to pocket square is to not match it exactly to the color of your tie. Although, this rule gets broken often, so we won’t sat anything if you do pick matching colors. White is the most popular and classic color, but you are free to show your style here, with any number of accent colors. A pocket square can also be a pattern, as long as your shirt or tie is not heavily patterned. The most popular fabrics for a pocket square is silk, satin twill, and cotton.

Keep in mind, too, that a pocket square can take the place of a tie. It adds just a little extra polish to your suit, if you happen to be in no mood for neck restriction.

There are tons of pocket square folds out there, but the most popular are a straight fold; folds with one, two, three or four points; a puff fold; or a flower fold. The straight fold is your most classic, straight edged look. It’s very pristine, if that’s what you’re going for, but if you want more of a flourish, we recommend any of the other folds.

Here’s what some of the most popular folds say about you, and if you want to know how to do a basic pocket square fold, you can watch our how-to video.

There are so many details that go into a wedding, but a pocket square is one you won’t want to miss. No stress needed, just pick your fave and add it to your order. See what we have to offer to make your union extraordinary.
